Pictures and videos can make up for the inherent shortcomings of text and give people a more visual understanding of things. When people want to learn about a piece of history and how people lived at a certain time, the video may be a good choice.

Fortunately, video technology was born in 1839, 181 years ago. In 1900, a few photographers from Canada used this technology to preserve many valuable videos of the Qing Dynasty. This was able to provide a visual understanding of the Qing Dynasty.

Well, it was surreal to see footage of the Qing dynasty from a hundred years ago. The camera technology at that time was outdated and the images were nowhere near as clear as those captured by digital cameras. However, seeing the Qing dynasty a hundred years ago is very amazing.

It’s exciting that AI can restore old videos and images

A large number of videos or pictures with color defects in the images are preserved in museums. Although they look old, they record very important moments in history. For example, the victory in World War II, speeches by politicians, etc.

In 2020, on June 3, DGSpitzer used AI technology to proactively restore videos of the Qing dynasty that were shot between 1900 and 1925. These are very precious videos.

This is footage of the people’s lives in the Qing Dynasty in the 1900s. There are images of children planting crops, beautiful market scenes, and various shopping streets. When the Qing people saw the camera for the first time, they acted very curiously.

As a viewer of the video, the people in the footage have long since passed away. But we can get an idea of the real situation of the Qing dynasty. Compared to the West at the same time, the Qing dynasty in the East was obviously very backward.

The AI recreated the skin color of the common people of the Qing Dynasty. They had long whips and dark skin. It can be judged from this that these people were often exposed to the sun. As for the work these people did, it should be very hard, but they were very muscular.

Well, the history of the Qing dynasty is better remembered when combined with pictures, as the Qing dynasty in 1900 was already as weak as an old man. The bureaucrats were corrupt and the huge annual payouts and expenses caused the peasants to become heavily taxed.

On the streets of the Qing dynasty, there were people who had fallen asleep from hunger. Passers-by were less likely to help these people, and relations between people were very cold. Many people lived like ants.

However, similar images have actually appeared more than once. If you know even just a little bit about Chinese history, similar images are common with the Ming Dynasty.

The founding and overthrow of the dynasty have been happening all along. When the Qing Dynasty was first established, emperors and bureaucrats would carefully manage the country and do everything possible to revive these dynasties.

But as the throne passes through several times, the ability of the dynastic administrators will decline. Some problems that might have threatened the survival of the Qing regime would not necessarily be resolved in time until a new dynasty was formed. Perhaps this is the pattern of the dynastic cycle of succession.

In Conclusion

A worn photo or a blurry video can record history. The birth of AI impact restoration technology is helping people understand history in a more accessible way. There are also videos that may help you learn more about the history of the Qing Dynasty.
